after hearing a cry for help, the fishermen sprang into action, risking their lives to save another. good evening. i'm lynn melling. thank you for joining us tonight. the rescue happened yesterday morning at lake ahquabi. a man who was taking wildlife photos had fallen through the ice. the fishermen who rescued the man say they don't consider themselves heroes...even though they did save a life. mike dasilva spoke with the fishermen today and he has their story. ing from methodist hospital, 58 year-old rick rauzi saying on facebook quote "i have to say that yesterday i came as close to death as i ever want to be..not to be melodramatic, but it's a heavy thing to actually say goodbye to your wife and kids and face death alone...i shouldn't have made it." but he did make it... thanks to these two guys... 18:45:44- it started off like any other day." but catching fish and having a good time would soon give way to a rescue rescue mission...after damian bell's son konnor said he heard someone screaming for help. 18:48:06-- it was hard to make out anything besides geese

point. we said buddy, i think it's just the geese." but the screaming continued...the conditions were such that you couldn't see anything across the lake, and it was snowing really hard. so damian and jesse left their boys with a phone and told them to stay put... 18:50:06--13 'we knew the kids were safe where they were because of the testing of the ice we had done. we put them both in one shack so that they could be with each other.' not knowing what they were getting themselves into...the two men got into a truck and drove around the park to the beach... 18:50:54 "you walk up to the beach and it's 50 feet of open water and then about ten feet of ice and then you see the gentlemen in the water. at that point he still had enough strength and energy, he could raise his hand to point out where he was so where were able to see him real clearly. the nearby cage full of canoes was locked... 18:52:22--34 "we ended up having to forcibly move some of the gate to get through it. he made it through the gate, was able to then stand up a canoe on his own, stack it up and actually stack it up over the top of the fence." with nothing but a rope and a canoe...damian made his way towards rauzi...and was able to tie the rope around him...and stayed

"it's their day off, it's presidents day, they weren't working." "this one ran for an hour, hour got it shut off which increases the damage. that is part of the city's responsibility is it not?" "leftover water continues to run behind the home of the ostings...while the city blames a change in temperature for the break, the ostings say they could be left in the cold with the bill." "i think it's the city's ostings, who are without flood insurance...hoped to never have to deal with... "i don't know ask more questions i guess, i just assumed the city would take care of it." due to the size of the break ames water may appear to be rusty...public relations officer susan gwiasda says it is not dangerous to drink but can stain clothes used in laundry...they are encouraging residents to run cold water for several minutes until it's clear and avoid using hot water until it is clear because it may pull the rust into your

the bus driver accused of killing an iowa state university student last december is entering a formal not guilty plea. online court records show benjamin clague entered a written plea of not guilty to a charge of leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death. clague is accused of the hit-and-run death of i-s-u freshman emmalee jacobs. jacobs' body was found on lincoln way at the intersection of ash avenue in early december... last month the investigation lead police to clague. they say he hit jacobs with a cy- ride bus and didn't stop ... even though cameras on the bus show he was aware he hit something. scheduled for march 22nd. a marshalltown man is facing kdnapping charges... after des moines police say.. he abducted the mother of his children at gunpoint on sunday. the des moines register reports his into a car. he reportedly pulled out two handguns and threatened to kill her. the woman escaped from the car and police. lopez was arrested for violation of a no

a domestic violence survivor is sharing her story in hopes it grabs the attention of lawmakers. nats of video," i was his 6th victim, i never thought this would happen to me." tiffany allison worked on a p-s-a that recreates the injuries she and six others suffered at the hands of the same man. in 2009, allison was beaten by her boyfriend.. he was sentenced to two and a half years but served just ten months.... he is now back in prison for assaulting another woman. allison is pushing for legislation that would require third strike offenders of any violent crime to serve at least 85- percent of their sentence. currently most only serve about 33- percent. we're learning more about a deadly weekend shooting involving urbandale police. it happened early saturday at the "holiday inn" on merle hay road. officers were responding to a drug complaint, when a fight broke out in the lobby. officials say 29 year old ali yahia, of des moines, started firing a gun. police returned fire and killed

eric hamer turns problem solving into a profession. "on a 45 and pulled it up." career challenges take some twists and turns. "i took a semester of college and decided it wasn't for me." so, hamer turned to a trade. he now works as an apprentice plumber with ragan mechanical. starting pay, 31-thousand dollars a year. "every day, i go to work, and i learn something different." the 23 year old atkinson man is halfway through a highly competitive training program with the plumbers and pipefitters union. when he's not at work, there's two-week study sessions at local 25. "it's not going to come up. try it." hamer is in a great situation to work and train. demand for plumbers is expected to increase by nearly 25 percent over the next decade. "being able to earn while you learn is something that is amazing, and it's a great opportunity for people like me." when hamer becomes a journeyman in two years, his salary potential will approach six figures. "we make good money. i'm not going to lie to you. that's a big part of it."

out of the marine corps. he teaches in the union training program. "if i didn't have this, i don't know what i'd be doing." this is a trade that produces visible results and a promising future. "out of high school, you don't really expect to be thrown right into the workforce, but it's really helped me become more of an adult." "while the union provides a great outlet for building a career, community college programs also spark the transition from school to work." "we would probably do a c-arm to the knee." health science is key for most degrees that offer the best return from scott community college. the job market is great locally, even better regionally. "more going from a generalist to a specialist is the best way to go." these students will pay nearly nine thousand dollars in tuition. but they'll get the most bang for the buck. when they become x-ray technologists, starting salaries range from 16 to 21 dollars per hour. with experience, they can make more than 50 thousand dollars locally. "many times

they even graduate, with the promise that they will graduate." these students are learning how to record and study electrical activity of the brain and nervous system. "some will specialize in epilepsy. some will specialize in surgery." "the job market is actually phenomenal." there are lots of job openings and not enough people to fill them. they'll make about 49-thousand dollars a year right out of the two-year program. with experience, they can double their salary. "it's a very promising situation for our students, and i am very proud of them." "oh, i think we're going to be too tall." training and studying to build a future that pays. it's already working for eric hamer. "i plan on this being my lifelong career." they're finding satisfying jobs that

maybe she's confident of victory, or perhaps she's hedging her bets over a loss in nevada, and already looking ahead to texas, which doesn't vote until march first. in northern syria several hospitals and a school have come under attack. at least 22 people were killed, including children. a hospital run by "doctors without borders," in idlib province was hit four times according to the humanitarian group. doctors without borders says the strikes were deliberate-- blaming the syrian government coalition. other attacks took place in azaz, near the turkish border. a women and children's hospital was hit-- as well as a school sheltering people displaced by war. pope francis is making headlines -- reaching out to native people in mexico today... the pope authorized three indigenous languages to now officially be used in catholic rites. and, as part of the pontiff's "year of mercy"...he's also army of priests around the globe.

pope francis monday condemned the mistreatment of mexico's indigenous people...of mayan and indian descent. pope francis says: "your people have been misunderstood and excluded from society. some have considered your values, culture and traditions to be inferior. others...have stolen your lands or contaminated them." the pope also saying the world should learn from their cultures -- specifically their deep appreciation and protection of nature. pope francis says: "the environmental challenge that we are experiencing and its human causes, affect us all and demand our response." all of this during a visit to chiapas - the least catholic and most southern state in mexico. the pope's message coming while celebrating mass for thousands...for the first time in the three main native languages of mexico. guzman says: "it is important that he comes here because we are indigenous and we are also catholic." meantime, as the pope continues his five-day visit in mexico... he is dispatching more than a thousand - quote - "missionaries of mercy"...around the world...particularly to remote areas... to encourage

it was interesting to see what iowa would do with season ticket prices. on one hand, the hawks come off a perfect 12 and oh regular season. might want to capitalize on that. on the other hand, iowa had only one sellout, a night game against t minnesota. it's a slight increase. season tickets for 7 games now $405 for renewals, 415 for a new buyer. that's up from 395 for season tickets this past season. the new season ticket averages to just over $59 a game. individual tickets go on sale later, with wisconsin and michigan priced highest at 85 dollars. iowa state loses a grad transfer
